Roof Rats Around Cape Coral Homes

The canals also shape how they move. A seawall gives rodents a long protected edge with water nearby and plants or storage on the land side. On a canal lot, the inspection should include the dock, lanai, pool cage, roofline, and attic as one connected path.
Common roof rat entry points
Open roof returns and loose soffit panels are frequent concerns. A roof return is the corner where one soffit line meets another roof section. The outside trim may look complete even when an inner gap leads into the attic. A soffit panel can also slip out of its channel during a strong storm.
Other possible routes include damaged vent screens, gaps below roof tiles, openings around solar or cable work, and spaces where a pool cage meets the fascia. At ground level, rats may also use a garage corner or a large utility gap. The right repair depends on the surface and the size of the opening.
Do not seal an attic only because you found a hole. First confirm whether rats are still inside. Trapping and monitoring should guide the timing. Once the building is clear, close the approved gaps with metal mesh, sheet metal, mortar, or another strong material fastened to solid parts of the home.
Norway rats are different
Norway rats are larger, heavier, and more likely to stay near the ground. They may burrow and often appear near trash, commercial waste, or dense low cover. They are less common in Cape Coral homes than roof rats, but correct identification matters because trap and inspection areas will change.
Dropping shape, body size, tail length, sound location, and travel height all help with identification. If the signs are mostly in an attic, roof rats are more likely. If the activity stays around ground-level trash or burrows, Norway rats may be involved.
